even older school
The Ohio Players - Observation in Time (lala) The most fruitful tangent I have explored lately is "the first album by every funk band, before they became what they would become" and the Lou Rawls-esque big band blues and Stax groove from the pre-disco Ohio Players is surprisingly loose and greasy.
The Ohio Players - Soul Party (lala) is largely the same album, shuffled up by the reissue label Charly records, noteable for the James Brown-style "Soul Party"

To go really old school with the Ohio Players, you would have to go to the Ohio Untouchables, featuring the (now late) Robert Ward on guitar.
