Much of this past week was spent reeling from loss. Locally the reverberation of Justin Hilbun’s sudden passing is still in the air, while we reconcile a musical landscape without the Queen of the Blues Koko Taylor and New Orleans saxophonist Sam Butera. Even someone as seemingly eternal as David Carradine left us this week.
A different kind of passing hit me hardest this week, though. Construction crews have finally started the dismantling of the Westdale Monument at the corner of Claycut and Jefferson, and while it seemed a foregone conclusion, I had hopes that the mud of bureaucracy would keep it around a little longer, even if the impassioned pleas of many couldn’t halt the destruction altogether.
But life is for the living, and there is plenty of life to be lived this week. A number of under-the-radar shows at Insomkneeack’s (above the old Broadmoor Theatre on Florida) and Loubie’s House (380 College Hill Dr.). The Myrtles are performing an all-ages set on the fourth-floor terrace at the Shaw Center along with ensembles of students from Doug Gay's Baton Rouge Music Studio opening.
Big names like Australian electropop twins The Veronicas and critically claimed yet unprintably named Holy F*ck are making stops this week, and if all that isn’t enough, there is a Prince Tribute Night being staged at the North Gate Tavern to benefit Hilbun’s family. So, if the elevator is trying to get you down this week, as I suspect it might for many of us, do as the Purple one suggests, and punch a higher floor!
