The street performance of Terry Riley’s “In C” staged by Dave Hinson in Spanish Town went off rather nicely, as this video will attest. It may not have matched the size and impact of the recent all-star performance of the piece at Lincoln Center, but this very much captured the ethos of this music. It was designed for a group of any size to be able to create something wonderful very quickly, and the musicians greeting the sunset with a burble of pulses and interwoven melodies did exactly that. Thanks to all involved, and hopefully more things like this will start taking place.
Legendary singer-songwriter Chuck Brodsky will be performing Wednesday at the Red Dragon, another of this city’s finest homegrown efforts. Chris Maxwell e-mailed to say he has a number of open seats for this show, so if you’ve never made it out to one of the more intimate musical experiences in town, now is a great time to try it out. Shows get started around 8 p.m.
There are still a few balcony seats available for guitar god Leo Kottke’s Thursday night appearance at the Manship Theatre. It is difficult to imagine a musician better suited for the Manship’s intimate stage.
One last thing: In 1949 a very young Ornette Coleman, then playing tenor sax in a touring R&B group, was beaten in the streets of Baton Rouge, his horn smashed by a crowd, all because his music was hard to dance to. If anyone knows the specifics of this story, like where the club was or the date of the incident, please drop me a line in the comments or via the 225 contact page.
