Terry Allen - Pedal Steal

If you know painter and musician Terry Allen from his classic outlaw country romps Juarez and Lubbock (On Everything), this 35-minute country/rock/folktale tone poem (listen) will be a shock. If you are not familiar with those records this will still be a shock. Ry Cooder and Barry Adamson have taken many stabs at this sort of thing with usually mixed results, but this is a winner. Allen's twang permeates this: singing songs or whooping up tribal chants or talking about people watching PTL at the Wigwam motel, but mostly, it is in the noise of this record. The guitar solos, the absent strums, the hum of the lonesome wind. Like Terry Allen himself, this is a piece of work.
