100 words on Alex Chilton's Voice on Big Star's Third/Sister Lovers
I don’t get moved by vocalists much, I usually find they get in the way of the Great Roar, but Alex Chilton in the context of Big Star is a glaring exception. His seraphic, perfect falsetto flits in some place between a flute and loon on a foggy lake, and the fragile, turgid way he curls narcotic longing amidst all that stretched out, destroyed guitar on “Kangaroo” or that cover of “Femme Fatale” is the sharpest razor there is, slicing away everything so that the heart can sit there beating itself to death in the hot light of hormonal love.
